This is a newer alternative for interlock construction which is taking the market by storm. This system has had a 0 fault rate when installed correctly across North America.
The area is excavated the depth of the interlock stone, the Gator Base Styrofoam and 3/4 inch for ASTM No.9 (3/8 Chip Clean Stone). The sub base is compacted. A non-woven geofabric is used. The ASTM No.9 is installed using poles. Gator Base installed. Interlock installed. Gator Edge installed with specialized screws. Polymeric sand installed.
The Gator Base system saves time, labour and costs which is why this is one of the cheaper options when looking at base material for your interlock project.
This system is an engineered Styrofoam that drains and floats your interlock on a small bed of aggregate compared to the traditional way of installation.
This is a great alternative for people that have small tight backyards or bad access and still want to have interlock in their backyard and not have to pay a ridiculous bill with tons of add-on's because of their access to their home.
There are many, many, many contractors and happy customers with the Gator Base product that you can see from a simple google search. That is why CCS has done some extensive research and hands on experience with Gator Base. We stand behind this product as a great alternative to get a great interlock project for a much smaller cost.

This is how interlock has been installed for many, many, many, many years.
We take pride in doing the traditional way the right way.
We excavate a minimum of 14" with up to 24" depending on application.
All of our sub base is prepped as to ICPI standards.
We use woven geo fabric with plenty of overlapping between pieces for maximum strength.
On applications where vehicle traffic will be on the interlock, we suggest adding a geo grid system to help with the overall life of the product. Adding it to a pedestrian traffic only application will also be a great add on and extend the life of the project.
We use crusher run Granular A and Granular B in our applications for vehicle traffic.
We use crusher run Granular A for applications that will have pedestrian traffic.
The rest of the installation for the traditional way goes as so;
the use of a leveling aggregate (ASTM No.9, Also known as HPB, 1/4 Chip), interlock installed, edge restraint (snap edge with 10" spikes or reinforced concrete) installed, and polymeric sand.
This is a proven method that has worked for generations and if done properly and maintained can last a very, very, long time.

In Canada, the biggest challenge is the frost and the heaving because of our deadly winters. Engineer's are just amazing, because they never stop trying to make things better and more efficient.
Over the last generation or so Professionals in the interlock and construction industry have been installing in Canada under a new method called Open Graded Base. It is similar to a Permeable Base which is used in applications where the water must be drained and not moved off of the interlock.
The logic behind this, is water running through your base is better then water getting caught in your base. Also, the aggregate used in this application is called 3/4 Clear. Unlike crusher run (Granular A), this aggregate is a clean stone and actually compacts to 75% just by pouring it into the hole. Making it easier to get a 100% compaction everywhere.
Also, when the frost comes and we get our heaving and movement due to our winter freeze and spring thaw.... When the aggregate settles it will re-compact itself as there is no fines in the aggregate. This leaves no loose areas and allows the aggregate to lock itself back into place. Unlike Traditional methods, which over time will have issues from the frost heave and spring thaw.
The leveling bedding is ASTM No.9 which is also permeable stone as well.
Here at CCS we use Geo Grid and Driveway Grid in all our Open Graded applications to ensure you get maximum strength and longevity in your project.
Many professional installers and contractors have switched over to Open Graded Base ONLY because they are convinced it is the best method for Canadian interlock applications.
The aggregate cost more, anywhere the interlock is right up against foundation a sealant is suggested be used on the foundation, and geogrid system is to be installed with the Open Graded method. Making this the most expensive option. But for a long lasting installation in our harsh Canadian winters, This is the best option.
There is tons of info about Open Graded Base online, or give us a call and we can go into more detail for you.
